The Heart Of A Father -
NARRATOR: It's been said that experience is the best teacher… I find myself asking, "Isn't there an easier way?” Wouldn't it be great if we would just listen to all the advice and instruction we've been given through the years? If we could just absorb and remember all the lessons history has to teach us? Oh sure, I understand that there are just too many unknowns - too many of our experiences that, just don't fit the mold… Too many variables when it comes to people and their actions…or reactions. It's true; sometimes I can't even predict my own feelings or behavior. And what about all the lessons that the classroom failed to mention. For instance, have you ever known a guy who took a class on what to do or what not to do in the presence of a crying woman? Me either! …But, just think of it, if we could learn and know all we needed to know in some other way - rather than experience, imagine how many mistakes that would prevent. We wouldn’t have to say, "If only I could go back and do it all over again" or the words “I’m Sorry” as often as we do! We probably wouldn’t have to take the risk of depending on others for help. We might not even have to resort to… prayer…Humph.
FATHER: Hi…My wife is in there…She's going to have a baby… I'm very concerned! Oh NO! No!…She's fine…no, no, the doctor expects the baby to be fine too! … It's ME I'm worried about! When our first child was born, I was a mess! They almost had to hospitalize ME! It was awful; I passed out right as the baby was being born! The doctor announced “It’s a boy”, and I hit the floor. What a sight, both my wife and me being wheeled out of delivery in separate beds.
…It's the pain, the screaming…the blood…I CAN'T HANDLE IT! Please don't make me go in there!
…OH I feel faint!
…Quick, somebody get the doctor! I think it's time!
Oh NO! No!...
NARRATOR: There is nothing that gives you hope for the future like a child. You look into those big, bright, beautiful eyes and see incredible potential! An innocence that hasn't been tainted by evil influences! A faith that hasn't yet been discouraged or told that "it can't be done"! …You also see the talent and the time to do and be - far beyond what we ever could.
…So, we invest in our children - the hopes and dreams who will outlive us and be the greatest potential for good and change in our crazy, sinful, mixed up world.
FATHER: Hey, hey, what's going on in here? You want to wake the whole neighborhood up? Shhh, Come on now, we need to let your mother sleep. She has been through a lot in order to bring you into the world…I guess you and me already have a lot in common…we can both be a real pain to your mom. Shhh… Come on there's no need to cry, that's just the way it is with us guys…Guess what? I was at the sports shop today and I bought the perfect rod and reel for you! Don’t tell your mom, she’ll kill me if she knows I got it. I know you'll love it! The reel is a Berkley Dual Cam and is it ever smooth and easy to cast. The rod is an ultra light, so you won't have any trouble handling it. I can hardly wait until your mom will let me take you and your brother out on the lake…the three of us, hauling in those Walleye and Northern…What we'll do is take the boat out on Millacs to this little spot I know about. It's kind of tucked back in on this southern little cove. That's one place I never get skunked, I always come away with something! Don't worry, if you tie into a big one, I'll help you pull it in! I remember my first big catch, I thought I was pulling up bottom… I was sure that either me or the pole or both were going to end up in the lake. But I didn’t dare let go, I just held on for dear life and screamed my head off until your grandpa came over and helped me pull him in…
Hey, hey,
FATHER: One of these days son, one of these days, you and me…it's gunna be great! That's it, back to sleep, rest those little eyes…(hum)
NARRATOR: Men are unique and interesting creatures, and, I might add, they are not always understood or appreciated by the opposite sex. When women bond with other women, they do it while having a warm conversation over a hot cup of tea. Men on the other hand, bond with other guys while involved in something…like a sporting activity…like football, fishing. For women the activity would be distracting and detrimental to the idea of relationship building. But for guys, the sport IS the relationship! And as far as affection and caring goes, guys do that too! Like out on the football field, I mean, when a guy makes a good play on you and nearly knocks your lights out, you get up and let him know with a pat on the posterior. When a player is down, even if he's on the other team, you help him up. And when someone on your team scores or makes an incredible tackle…you show appreciation by either tackling him or butting helmets. Tell me, what could be warmer than that?
FATHER: Do you have a boy on the team? Yeah? Which one? Number 72? Oh Ryan, he's a big kid! Come on Blue, Let’s Go! Alright, here we go. Yes! Way to Go!! WHAT!!? Holding? Oh come on ref! AHHHH!.. Oh…sorry about your popcorn ma'am. I'll go to the concession stand and get you another bag… right after this next play! …Oh look they're giving the ball to Billy…That's it…Take it to the outside…Run it by him… Oh great move Billy…YES GO, GO, GO SCORE!! YES…YES…YES!! Yes Joey…I realize I'm an embarrassment to be with. Did you see that…did you see that? That's my kid!! What a natural! Only been playing a year and is running and scoring like he's been playing for five! I think that he's got great potential! If he keeps it up, he could go far! …Maybe even play professionally someday! That a boy Billy! Great run Billy!!
NARRATOR: Family… family is a thing, especially in our day, that has a wide variety of meaning for people. But, no matter who we are, for most of us, the word ‘family’ still conjures up images and memories that are filled with experiences and emotions of care free happy days, of an environment of love and security, and of times of growing and learning. Probably nothing has a more profound effect on us than our family memories. For this reason I guess it behooves us to make the best ones we can. …Even doing our best though, family life can sometimes be hard and disappointing. And when that happens…Somehow we don't see it coming - It catches us by surprise - unprepared - off-guard. I think the real challenge though, within the moments that life throws at us, is in not doing damage to or destroying the very things that are truly the most important. Like, what family is really all about - people… relationships… you know… family…
FATHER:
NOTE: Hi Sweetheart, I took the boys to do a little Christmas shopping. There is a plate for you on the second shelf in the fridge. By the way, you might want to take a look at Billy's report card. It just came today - It doesn't look good and I'm concerned - I don't know what is going on with him. He's a smart kid - this just doesn't make sense. We'll talk when I get home.
Love Ya
What's going on here? Every grade has dropped again! Homework not turned in…What homework? I thought that he'd been doing all of his homework. Assignments missing… Lacks motivation…I thought we had this thing solved! I thought that we had an understanding. I don't get it! Billy is better than this! How can a kid with so much talent and so much going for him…just act…like…like…he doesn't want to do anything!!? He's not dumb… I will not just stand by and let him keep slipping. We’ve just got to find a way to motivate him…help him see how important his school work is to his future…and to playing ball. I don't want to be hard on him…I don't want to restrict him…What choice does he leave me? Billy is not focused…I'm concerned about the influence of Billy's new friends.
NARRATOR: Being a parent is something that a person never fully understands until they become one themselves. Good parents really care about their children's welfare. They want them to grow up to be well-adjusted successful adults, prepared for life on their own. For this reason, most parents walk a tight rope between letting go and holding on…always weighing carefully the long term results. A parent's love for their child is what keeps them tethered to sanity while overlooking the cliff of insane circumstances - and that love is what prevents them from falling headlong into passionate mistakes.
FATHER: How many times am I going to have to deal with this? This is unbelievable! I thought that we had an agreement – my mistake! Here we go again! Anymore it seems like the only things that Billy and I talk about are issues!! All our relationship consists of anymore is conflict! …What am I going to do? I've tried everything…being lenient and giving him space to being restrictive,…I've tried grounding and removing privileges, I've tried reward and compromise…I've run out of ideas! …He just gravitates toward people who… just aren't good for him. At the same time he keeps drifting further and further from his mother and …me. At times…It's like…It's like…I don't even know him. Billy, what's happening here? What's happening to you? Where in the world are you?
FATHER: Wow!…I knew things weren’t good…but I never expected this! I’m shocked…that you would just come in here and demand your share of the family business…and what, you’re just going to leave? Everything…the company…the community…what about your friends…your family?!
Are things really that bad around here? What have any of us done that you would put our family through something like this? You’ve pushed this too far!! You can’t just walk in here and throw your little attitude around and…Come back here when I’m talking to you…Billy…BILLY!!
Billy…BILLY!!
What are we going to do? I suppose we can’t stop him from leaving…and what if we did…what good would that do? Yeah, that’s it, That’s what I could do…I’m going to withhold his portion of the family business…Yeah that’ll teach him… Go ahead and try to make it out there on your own…You think that You know so much!!
Your right, we can’t do that, he already blames every problem he has on you and me. He’d just use that as another excuse for any future failure he might have…and to distance himself from us even further. I just can’t do that…I don’t know what to do…I just know that I don’t want to completely close the door between the two of us.
Dear God, please help us…we don’t know what to do…we need your wisdom…Help us to do the right thing…please help Billy to see the direction he’s heading and where it will lead…Dear God please…Help us!
NARRATOR: Someone has said that people don’t usually change until the pain of remaining the same becomes greater than the pain of changing. Although true, the inherent problem with this principal, is that it doesn’t take into account what to do with the pain felt by loved ones who watch, and in their heart, walk through the pain with their friend or family member. There is a terrible feeling of helplessness…and sometimes …even hopelessness. That’s when we must, like never before, pray and trust in something…no, in Someone greater than ourselves for help and for hope!
FATHER: Are you sure that you want to do this? Are you sure that this is the right thing? Ok, ok sure.…Please be careful son, the world can be a tough place…there are a lot of people out there who will try and take advantage of you…be sure to watch how you carry your cash and …Son, your mom and I …we care about you…yeah ok…goodbye Billy…I love
you…Please don’t go.
Billy…
What did I do wrong? I thought that I had always tried to do the right things…to bring my children up in the right way. I tried to give them what they needed and some of what they wanted without spoiling them. I always tried to teach them what was right…Was I too strict? Should I have given him more freedom? Maybe I should have kept a closer eye on where he went and who he hung out with…Was I there when he needed me? Where did I go wrong? There must have been something I did or could have done…or this wouldn’t have happened…this just can’t happen…not to us…
NARRATOR:
When describing the qualities of love, the writer of
I Corinthians said that: “Love always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres and never fails.” In other words…love never gives up! What a wonderful thing that is! Have you ever stopped to think where you’d be if it wasn’t for those who wouldn’t give up on you? Love doesn’t throw in the towel when things get tough. Instead, it keeps on…knowing that, therein lies the real power to heal a heart, to change a life…to rescue a soul!
FATHER:
Dear Billy, its three–o-clock in the morning…I couldn’t sleep. I think about you all the time. Your mom and I pray for you every day. You mom is worried that you’re not taking good care of yourself – getting enough to eat. We’ve been especially concerned about some news we’ve been hearing about you – that you are in some kind of trouble. Your mom and I pray that it’s just some rumor or a mistake. We pray that you are ok. Yesterday your mom was going through some things out in the garage…and she found that old ball you and I used to practice with. Do you remember that? I don’t know if it will even hold air any more. We sure used to have a great time together. Oh son, I really miss you…how I wish we could go out and throw the ball around like we used to…
Billy, I know that you can’t read these letters that I’ve been writing…I don’t even know where to send them.
But I’m going to save them in case you…no, for when you come back home again…because I’ve been trying to say in them all the things I hoped you already knew…but maybe I didn’t say enough. Like all the times I’ve been so proud of you…and that I believe in you…and that I love you. DAD
NARRATOR: When your car breaks down you can take it to a
mechanic to have it diagnosed and repaired. When you break an arm you can go to the hospital to have it x-rayed set and cast. But where can you go with a broken heart to have it fixed? I only know of one place…as someone has said in a song…It’s a place called grace! God’s grace is what enables a person to face themselves, to face other people, to forgive…to start over and, to put the past where it belongs – behind you! And then, to move forward into the future with renewed hope and freedom!
FATHER: Hi Harold! Oh, you found my slipper, it must have come off when I ran across the yard yesterday. Thanks! Yeah I’m kind of in a hurry here! We’re heading out with the family in a few minutes. We’ve got a really special evening planned. I know, can you believe it? Billy sure surprised us yesterday! We didn’t know if we would ever see him again. It’s a long story, but he’s doing Ok. He’s talking about making a new start, you know turning things around. I can tell that there has been a real change…sure…you’re right it’s going to take some time for healing too…but he’s home…thank God he’s home! What’s that? Forgive him? …Of course I forgive him…he’s my son! Billy? You ready? Listen I’ll have to talk to you later, we’ve got to get going. Sure Harold, see ya tomorrow.
Come on out when you’re ready, I’ll pull the car out of the garage.
Hi Harold!
Billy?
NARRATOR:
Home…What a word! It describes a place like no
other! Home is a refuge, a place of rest and safety. It’s a place where the important seeds of learning were first planted in our lives. Home should also be a place of unconditional love and acceptance…kind of like a cool drink – an oasis within the desert of life. When you’ve tried everything else and you can’t go anywhere else…you can always come home!
FATHER: Would you look at that! This used to be your old bassinette! You fixed it up! It look s great! Right, right we don’t want to wake him. Oh son, he’s so beautiful! He looks just like you did when you were a baby. What do you mean what if he turns out like you? Why, that would be great! I think you’ve turned out pretty well! No, Billy, don’t say that. You must not live in the shadow of what might have been, but in the light of what is ahead. Look, you’ve got a lot of living…a lot of opportunities in front of you!
Here’s your opportunity, He is going to look to you for wisdom and instruction, for love and acceptance. He is going to look to you for his picture of what the Heavenly Father must be like. No, no none of us are perfect. Just let him see God in you. You’re going to do a great job! You’ll be a good father. Billy, the best thing you can do for your son is to be real, let him see your heart, let him get close to you. Don’t allow anything he does to drive a wedge in your heart. Just love him unconditionally and continually. And, above all, don’t ever give up on him! Remember, God never gave up on us!
Uh oh, looks like he’s starting to stir. Look, I’ll stay here with him, you go on ahead and take care of what you need to do. Sure, we’ll be alright. I’ll be out in a few minutes, you go ahead. Shhh, quiet now, that’s it back to sleep…(hum)
– by Pastor Mathews

The crisis of getting old
The chief part of a good old age consists in a good conscience and in a serene and tranquil mind. Whence it follows, that what God promises to Abraham, can only apply to those who truly cultivate righteousness: for Plato says, with equal truth and wisdom, that a good hope is the nutriment of old age; and therefore old men who have a guilty conscience are miserably tormented, and are inwardly racked as by a perpetual torture. But to this we must add, what Plato knew not, that it is godliness which causes a good old age to attend us even to the grave, because faith is the preserver of a tranquil mind. To the same point belongs what is immediately added, he was full of days, so that he did not desire a prolongation of life. We see how many are in bondage to the desire of life; yea, nearly the whole world languishes between a weariness of the present life and an inexplicable desire for its continuance. That satiety of life, therefore, which shall cause us to be ready to leave it, is a singular favor from God. - John Calvin.
